Phoenix, AZ – As Arizona braces for dense blowing dust this afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix has issued crucial safety tips for drivers. Visibility could drop to dangerous levels, making travel perilous.
According to the NWS, motorists are advised to pull off the road as far as possible, stop and turn off all lights, set the emergency brake, and ensure taillights are not illuminated. This reduces the risk of collisions in low-visibility conditions.
In addition to dust storms, an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect with temperatures expected to reach between 110 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit from Saturday morning through Sunday evening. Overexposure to such high temperatures can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke if not properly managed.
The forecast for Phoenix indicates mostly cloudy skies today with a high of 106 degrees. The heat continues into the weekend with highs of 104 degrees on Thursday and 108 degrees on Friday. The weekend will see even hotter conditions, with temperatures soaring to 110 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.
Residents in affected areas, including the Northwest Valley of the Phoenix Metro Area, East Valley, and other nearby regions, should take precautions to stay safe. Hazardous driving conditions due to reduced visibility from dust storms and increased risk of heat-related illnesses during extreme heat events are significant concerns.
