Tucson, Ariz. – Dangerous winds and searing heat are slamming southeastern Arizona today, with visibility dropping below a mile in areas like Safford, Sierra Vista, and Willcox as dust storms sweep across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, a Blowing Dust Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday for eastern Cochise and Graham counties, including the Upper San Pedro and Gila River Valleys. Isolated thunderstorms may push outflows up to 50 mph, kicking up dense dust that could reduce visibility to near zero on highways like I-10 and US-191. Meanwhile, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in place for the Gila River Valley, where temperatures could hit 112°F by late afternoon.
Residents in Douglas, Benson, Clifton, and Safford are advised to stay indoors if possible, especially those with respiratory issues or heart conditions. Windows and doors should remain closed, and outdoor exertion should be avoided.
Motorists are urged to follow the “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” protocol if caught in blowing dust: pull off the road, turn off lights, and keep feet off the brakes to avoid rear-end collisions.
More advisories may be issued this evening as winds persist. Conditions are expected to ease after 10 p.m., but updates will follow if threats continue.
