Phoenix, AZ – Drivers and residents across south-central Arizona are being urged to use caution this afternoon as the National Weather Service has issued a Blowing Dust Advisory and Flood Watch for the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the Blowing Dust Advisory will be in effect from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, impacting major roadways including Interstate 10 and Interstate 8. Forecasters warn that visibility could drop to under one mile in areas of dense blowing dust, with gusty winds exceeding 40 mph expected. Officials advise motorists to follow the safety rule: “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” if they encounter dangerous dust storms.

In addition, a Flood Watch has been posted for southern Arizona and parts of southeast California for Monday afternoon through the evening. Forecasters say localized rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible, especially in areas of thunderstorms. This could lead to flash flooding, road closures, and hazardous travel conditions, particularly along low water crossings, creeks, and washes.

The weather service warns drivers never to attempt to cross flooded roadways and to be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Communities including Phoenix, Casa Grande, Maricopa, Gila Bend, and Tucson are within the advisory area.

Officials encourage residents to have an emergency kit ready and to monitor updated forecasts throughout the day. Travelers along desert highways should allow extra time and be alert for sudden visibility drops or water on roadways.
