FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Snow will begin coating bridges and mountain highways by 8 p.m. Monday, threatening slick travel across the Mogollon Rim and Kaibab Plateau through the Tuesday commute. Strong wind gusts up to 50 mph will blow snow across roadways, cutting visibility at times.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. Monday until 5 p.m. MST Tuesday for elevations along the Western and Eastern Mogollon Rim and the Kaibab Plateau. Snow totals of 3 to 9 inches are expected during this period, including 4 to 6 inches in Flagstaff and Munds Park, 6 to 8 inches near Forest Lakes, and 4 to 6 inches at Jacob Lake.
A Winter Storm Watch then takes effect late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening, when an additional round of heavy snow could push totals up to 10 inches in higher terrain.
I-40 near Flagstaff, I-17 south of town, and Highway 87 near Forest Lakes may become snow-packed, especially during the Tuesday morning and evening drives. Officials urge drivers to delay non-essential travel and check conditions at az511.gov or by calling 511.
Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday evening, and additional advisories may be issued as the next storm wave develops.
