Phoenix, AZ – Two Arizona teenagers were found dead earlier this week at a remote campsite in the Tonto National Forest, prompting a homicide investigation by local authorities.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded early Tuesday morning to an area off State Route 87 between Mesa and Payson, near Mount Ord. There, they discovered the bodies of 18-year-old Pandora Kjolsrud and a 17-year-old male. Though officials have not formally released the name of the second victim, friends and family have publicly identified him as Evan Clark.
According to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner, both teens died from gunshot wounds. Their deaths are being classified as homicides, and investigators say the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
Arcadia High School confirmed that two of its students had died and announced that counseling resources would be available for those affected. The school has not released the students’ names, citing privacy concerns.
In a statement shared by Kjolsrud’s family, the teen was remembered as someone who brought joy to those around her. “She was a bright light in this world who loved every single person she met and had an unusual ability to make every person she met feel special and loved. She was a friend to many and a beloved daughter. She lived life in a big way and was always up for an adventure,” her mother said.
The Sheriff’s Office said it is continuing a “comprehensive and meticulous” investigation and urges anyone with information to call 602-876-TIPS.
No suspects have been named, and investigators have not released a motive.
