Phoenix, Arizona – Arizona is bracing for one of its hottest stretches this year as a prolonged extreme heat event begins Friday and intensifies through Tuesday. Afternoon temperatures could hit a sweltering 116°F in parts of the Phoenix Metro, with a Major Heat Risk now in effect across Maricopa County.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, an Extreme Heat Watch begins 10 a.m. Sunday and continues through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Affected areas include Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale, and surrounding cities. Highs will climb from 107°F Friday to 114°F by Monday, pushing limits on public safety, infrastructure, and energy usage.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor work from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., especially along exposed corridors like I-10 and Loop 101, where pavement and vehicle heat can spike. Heat exhaustion and stroke become likely without proper hydration or shade. Free cooling centers are open — dial 2-1-1 or visit maricopa.gov/heat for a full list.
Light winds and cloudless skies will only worsen conditions. OSHA recommends limiting exertion and wearing lightweight, breathable clothing. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911 if symptoms occur.
