Phoenix, Ariz. – Arizonans have a rare opportunity to directly influence the future of the state’s air quality—but the window to speak up closes soon.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is inviting public comments on its proposed 2024 Secondary Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) Boundary Recommendations Report. Residents have until August 11, 2025, to weigh in.

According to ADEQ, the recommendations will shape how sulfur dioxide—a harmful pollutant linked to asthma and other respiratory issues—is monitored and regulated across Arizona. A virtual public hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on August 11, giving residents another way to make their voices heard.

Sulfur dioxide is primarily produced by industrial sources and can severely impact vulnerable populations, especially children and older adults. The boundaries set in this report determine how the state meets federal air quality requirements and protects public health.

Residents can review the proposal and submit feedback at https://bit.ly/Proposed_SO2_NAAQS. Participating in the process ensures local concerns are considered in shaping Arizona’s environmental future.

Public comments remain open through August 11. Additional updates or hearings may follow based on feedback received.
