Flagstaff, Arizona – A critical fire weather day is unfolding across northeast Arizona, where dry winds and dangerously low humidity have prompted a Red Flag Warning until 8 p.m. MST Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the warning covers Navajo and Apache counties, including Holbrook, Kayenta, Winslow, and Window Rock. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph—gusting up to 40 mph—combined with relative humidity as low as 5% are creating conditions where wildfires can ignite and spread rapidly.

Fire officials are urging residents to avoid any activities that could spark flames, including dragging trailer chains, burning debris, or parking over dry grass. Local restrictions remain in effect, and even a small spark could trigger a fast-moving blaze under today’s conditions.

Drivers along I-40 and U.S. 191 should use caution, especially near areas like Dilkon, Chinle, and Sanders where visibility could be reduced by blowing dust. Campers and hikers should delay plans until Monday when winds are forecast to ease.

While fire danger will drop later this week, today marks one of the season’s most volatile fire weather days so far.

Red Flag Warnings remain in effect until 8 p.m. MST / 9 p.m. MDT tonight.
