Las Vegas, Nevada – Drivers crossing high elevations in southern Nevada and northwest Arizona face deteriorating conditions by late Tuesday afternoon as snow and 50 mph wind gusts sweep across terrain above 4,500 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 p.m. PST Tuesday to 4 p.m. PST Wednesday for Lincoln County in Nevada and the Northwest Plateau of Arizona. Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of snow, with isolated totals up to 6 inches, mainly at higher elevations. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph, producing blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Roads near Pioche, Caliente, Panaca and Alamo could become snow-covered Tuesday evening, while higher routes near Mt. Trumbull, Tuweep and the western Grand Canyon may see drifting snow overnight. Strong gusts may also knock down tree branches and create sudden crosswinds on exposed highways.
Travelers should delay non-essential trips across mountain passes and check 511 in Arizona and Nevada for updated road conditions. The most hazardous travel window stretches from late Tuesday evening through midday Wednesday, with advisories remaining in place until late Wednesday afternoon.
