Guadalupe, AZ – A Lyft driver was shot and killed in Guadalupe on Monday morning, leading to the swift arrest of a suspect the following day, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

On September 22, 2025, around 8:36 a.m., dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman who reported that her boyfriend had allegedly shot their Lyft driver while they were riding near Calle Bella Vista and Barbarita. Deputies arrived at 9221 Calle Bella Vista, where they found 51-year-old John Lucas unresponsive in the front seat. Fire personnel later pronounced him dead at the scene. Investigators confirmed multiple gunshots had been fired.

According to MCSO, detectives identified the suspect as 29-year-old Angel Lopez through investigative leads. On September 23, just after 9 a.m., deputies spotted Lopez in the area of Calle Batou in Guadalupe. When Lopez allegedly attempted to flee into a residence, tactical units and homicide detectives surrounded the home. With the assistance of the MCSO SWAT team, Lopez complied with commands and was safely taken into custody.

Lopez has been booked on charges of first-degree homicide and armed robbery. Sheriff Jerry Sheridan said the arrest highlights the department’s commitment to community safety, adding that deputies will continue to act “quickly and decisively against violent crime.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities encourage anyone with additional information to contact the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
