Flagstaff, Arizona – Triple-digit temperatures will bake the lower elevations of the Grand Canyon this weekend, creating life-threatening conditions for hikers and outdoor workers.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, an Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday evening below 4,000 feet. Temperatures are expected to climb to 110°F at Phantom Ranch and 103°F at Havasupai Gardens during peak afternoon hours.
The heat risk is highest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when hikers should avoid descending more than 1.5 miles from the Bright Angel Trailhead. Park rangers strongly advise avoiding physical activity during these hours and emphasize proper preparation for anyone venturing below the rim.
Supai, North Rim, and Grand Canyon Village visitors should drink extra fluids, double calorie intake, and carry salty snacks and electrolyte mixes. Protective gear like wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen is essential. Heat-related illness is a serious threat, even for experienced hikers.
This watch signals one of the hottest weekends of the year in the canyon. More heat alerts may follow if conditions intensify.
