PHOENIX, Ariz. – Residents across the Valley are facing a dangerous combination of extreme heat and poor air quality as warnings remain in effect through the weekend. Afternoon highs are expected to climb between 109 and 115 degrees, while ozone pollution continues to pose a risk across Maricopa County.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, an Extreme Heat Warning is in place until 8 p.m. Sunday, covering much of the metro area including Glendale, Mesa, Tempe, and Scottsdale. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has also extended an Ozone High Pollution Advisory through Friday, urging residents to limit time outdoors and reduce driving.
Heat-related illnesses become more likely in these conditions, with health officials advising people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours. Cooling centers are open throughout Maricopa County by calling 2-1-1 for locations. Outdoor workers are encouraged to take frequent breaks, wear light clothing, and drink water often.
Drivers are also being urged to carpool or use mass transit to reduce ozone levels. Those with asthma, children, and older adults may experience more breathing difficulties until conditions improve.
Warnings remain in effect through Sunday night, with possible storm chances returning by early next week.
