TUCSON, Ariz. – Scattered thunderstorms could bring brief downpours to the Tucson area Saturday before extreme heat takes over early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday, mainly after late morning, with isolated lightning possible across Pima County. The strongest cells could create slick roads on stretches of I-10 and reduced visibility during the afternoon commute.

Saturday night brings only a slight chance of storms before skies clear. By Sunday, high temperatures climb into the upper 90s, and by Monday and Tuesday Tucson will see highs of 100°F to 102°F under mostly sunny skies. Calm mornings followed by gusty northwest winds are expected in the afternoons.

Emergency officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. With overnight lows stuck in the mid-70s, little relief from the heat is expected after sunset.

Sunny and hot conditions will dominate through at least Thursday, with only a slim chance of storms returning late in the week.
