Phoenix, AZ – The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Freeze Warning for parts of east-central Arizona, including the Globe and Miami areas, where temperatures are expected to drop near or below freezing early Friday morning.
The warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday, with forecast lows ranging from 28° to 33°F across portions of southern Gila County. Temperatures this cold can damage or kill sensitive plants, pose risks to outdoor pets, and create additional hardship for unhoused residents.
Forecasters noted that some areas already experienced subfreezing temperatures Thursday morning, and another night of freezing conditions could worsen impacts. Residents are urged to cover exposed plants, bring pets indoors, and provide shelter or warmth for those vulnerable to the cold.
This freeze event is typical for the early December transition in higher-elevation desert regions, marking the end of the local growing season, according to NWS Phoenix.
The cold spell is expected to ease by late Friday morning as temperatures slowly rebound into the 50s and 60s by afternoon.
