Tucson, Arizona – Flash flooding could impact parts of southern Arizona Sunday as heavy rain from a tropical moisture surge moves across the region, prompting a Flood Watch for Tucson, Sierra Vista, and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, the Flood Watch is in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday night for Pima, Pinal, Cochise, and Santa Cruz counties, including the Tohono O’odham Nation and mountainous regions like the Catalinas and Huachucas. Rainfall from slow-moving thunderstorms may quickly overwhelm dry washes, roads, and creeks.

Cities like Tucson, Green Valley, Nogales, Ajo, and Benson could see localized flooding by midday. Mountain areas such as Mount Lemmon and Madera Canyon are especially vulnerable due to runoff from higher elevations. Drivers should avoid crossing flooded roadways and watch for debris flow near burn scars.

Residents are urged to stay alert, especially in flood-prone areas and canyons. Prepare by charging electronics, securing outdoor belongings, and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak rainfall.

This is the first major flash flood risk of the season for southern Arizona. Additional watches or warnings may be issued Sunday depending on storm development.
