GILA, Ariz. – Rising water levels along Tonto Creek have triggered a Flood Warning for portions of east central Arizona, where low-water crossings are already being inundated Monday afternoon. The National Weather Service in Phoenix warns the threat will persist until 9 p.m. Tuesday as streams and creeks continue to swell.
According to the NWS, stream gauges along Tonto Creek showed water levels climbing above action stage at 12:27 p.m. MST, with flooding already occurring in parts of Gila County. Officials caution that low-lying and flood-prone areas could become impassable as water spreads over roads and bridges, particularly near the Tonto Basin region.
Residents are urged to avoid travel through flooded crossings and to heed barricades. Even shallow water can sweep vehicles away, emergency officials emphasized. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key message as flash flooding continues through Tuesday evening.
Flood warnings remain in effect through Tuesday night, and additional alerts could be issued if rain persists or runoff intensifies across the region.
