Phoenix, Arizona – Gusty winds and dangerously dry air will elevate wildfire risk across the higher terrain east of Phoenix on Monday, with a Red Flag Warning in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, wind speeds of 25 to 40 mph and humidity levels as low as 9% will create critical fire weather conditions, especially in parts of Gila and eastern Maricopa counties. The warning includes areas such as Globe, Payson, and Roosevelt Lake.

Fire danger will be especially high along U.S. Highway 60 and State Route 87, where dry brush and gusty conditions could rapidly spread any spark. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, delay yard work involving power tools, and properly dispose of cigarettes.

Even parking a hot vehicle on dry grass could start a fire.

Warnings remain in effect through early Monday evening, and further advisories could follow if winds persist into Tuesday.
