Tucson, Arizona – Southern Arizona braces for extreme fire risk as Monday’s 99°F heat and strong winds set the stage for Tuesday’s Fire Weather Watch, now officially issued for Tucson and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, east to southeast winds will shift southwest and strengthen Monday afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 29 mph. The Fire Weather Watch takes effect Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with humidity dropping below 15% and temperatures climbing to 93°F. These conditions heighten the danger for rapid wildfire spread, especially near I-10 and State Route 86 west of Tucson.

Expect mostly sunny skies Monday with little relief overnight, as Monday night lows hover near 69°F. By Tuesday, partly sunny skies return but so do gusty winds—posing a major threat for brush fires across the Sonoran Desert corridor.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose materials, and report smoke or fire immediately. High fire danger makes non-essential travel and outdoor work risky during peak hours.

Looking ahead:

  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high of 85°F, with calm breezes.
  • Thursday: Sunny and warmer, reaching 89°F.
  • Friday and Saturday: Temperatures stay in the low 90s with continued clear skies.
