Grand Canyon Village, Arizona – Extreme heat continues to grip the lower elevations of the Grand Canyon, with temperatures soaring as high as 113°F at Phantom Ranch and 101°F at Havasupai Gardens through 7 p.m. Sunday, August 4. Visitors and hikers below 4,000 feet should expect conditions among the most dangerous of the year, especially in exposed areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the Extreme Heat Warning covers all lower-elevation sections of the Grand Canyon, including popular trails and campgrounds. The advisory remains in effect until Sunday evening, urging all park guests to avoid strenuous activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and recommending hikers not descend more than 1.5 miles from the Bright Angel Trailhead. Officials urge travelers to carry extra water, use sunscreen, and double their calorie intake to avoid dehydration and exhaustion.

Local agencies are emphasizing caution for those staying at Phantom Ranch, Grand Canyon Village, or hiking near Havasupai Gardens. Risk for heat-related illness is high, especially for visitors without access to cooling or shade. Emergency crews are on alert, and park rangers urge guests to “hike smart” by taking frequent breaks, wearing wide-brimmed hats, and consuming salty snacks along with electrolytes.

If symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke occur, move to shade and seek immediate help—heat stroke is an emergency and warrants a 911 call. The heat warning may be extended if triple-digit temperatures persist into next week.
