PHOENIX, Ariz. – Drivers across the southern Phoenix metro face dangerous travel conditions this evening as strong thunderstorm outflow winds kick up dense blowing dust, cutting visibility to less than a mile at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, a Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect from 4 p.m. through 9 p.m. Thursday for southern portions of the Valley, including Pinal County. Gusts topping 40 mph will push walls of dust across major roadways, creating sudden whiteout conditions.

The greatest impacts are expected along Interstate 10, U.S. 60, and State Route 87, where quick drops in visibility could cause accidents. Officials urge drivers to pull off the road, turn off headlights, and keep feet off the brakes if caught in a dust storm.

Communities including Chandler, Queen Creek, Casa Grande, and Maricopa are most at risk this evening. Blowing dust can also impact air quality and trigger breathing difficulties for people with respiratory issues.

The advisory is expected to expire by 9 p.m., but additional warnings may be issued if storms redevelop overnight.
