ARIZONA — Bitter cold grips northern Arizona this morning as Flagstaff wakes to just 16°F under a clear sky. Frost coats rooftops, windshields, and pine needles, signaling the start of a true December chill. But the quiet won’t last — forecasters say a quick burst of snow could sweep through by Wednesday morning, bringing slick conditions to the high country.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, skies will cloud up later today as a weak system approaches from the west. Highs near 49°F this afternoon will give way to a sharp drop into the lower 20s by evening, with west winds gusting up to 17 mph.

The best chance for snow arrives late Wednesday morning through the afternoon, when a 30% chance of snow showers could dust higher elevations and nearby passes. While accumulations are expected to stay under a half inch, any light coating could create slick spots on I-40, Route 66, and mountain roadways.

After the system passes, temperatures plunge again — Wednesday night lows will fall near 15°F, followed by a stretch of clear but cold days. Thursday and Friday will stay sunny with highs in the low 40s to mid-40s, perfect for those tackling early holiday errands or travel.

Five-Day Flagstaff Outlook:

  • Tuesday: Increasing clouds, high 49°F, low 22°F.
  • Wednesday: Snow showers possible, high 41°F, low 15°F.
  • Thursday: Sunny, high 40°F, low 15°F.
  • Friday: Sunny, high 46°F, low 23°F.
