Tucson, Ariz. – Hazardous travel is expected across southern Arizona Wednesday as blowing dust driven by strong outflow winds reduces visibility to as low as a quarter-mile in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Tucson and Phoenix, blowing dust advisories are in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. MST for the Tucson metro, Tohono O’odham Nation, and South Central and West Pinal County, including cities like Eloy, Sells, and Marana. Wind gusts from nearby thunderstorms could reach 45 mph, creating sudden visibility drops on highways including I-10 and AZ-87.
Drivers are urged to stay alert and avoid travel during peak dust activity. If caught in a dust storm, officials recommend pulling completely off the road, turning off headlights and keeping feet off the brakes to avoid collisions.
People with respiratory issues should remain indoors, especially in areas like Picacho Peak State Park and Green Valley where dust is expected to be thickest.
These conditions mirror early monsoon season patterns common in July, and more advisories may be issued as storms develop. Drivers should monitor conditions through this evening and stay updated via local emergency alerts.
