WICHITA, Kan. — Much colder weather is expected to return to Kansas late this week as Arctic air spreads across the region, bringing dangerous cold and a chance for snow, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.
Forecasters say mild conditions will continue today and Wednesday, with highs mainly in the upper 40s to low 50s across central and south-central Kansas. Temperatures will begin to fall Thursday before a sharp drop Friday as Arctic air arrives.
By Friday and Saturday, high temperatures are expected to fall into the teens, with overnight lows dropping below zero in some areas. Wind chills may become dangerously cold, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.
Snow is also possible from Friday into the weekend, though amounts and coverage remain uncertain. Any snowfall combined with bitter cold could create hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service urges residents to prepare now by dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and winterizing vehicles. Drivers are encouraged to carry emergency supplies, check road conditions before traveling, and monitor forecasts as details become clearer later this week.
