A strong cold front sweeping across Nebraska on Wednesday will deliver the coldest air of the season so far, with temperatures dropping sharply by Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, overnight lows are expected to fall into the single digits to just below zero, especially across areas east of Highway 281. While winds will be relatively light, the combination of cold air and light breeze could produce wind chill values as low as -10°F in a few isolated northeastern low-lying areas.

The cold front will pass through the region during the day Wednesday, bringing clearing skies and allowing temperatures to plummet after sunset. By early Thursday morning, much of central and eastern Nebraska will experience their coldest temperatures of the season, marking a dramatic shift from earlier mild conditions.

Despite the harsh chill, winds are expected to stay under 10 mph, reducing the risk of severe blowing snow or drifting. No significant precipitation is forecast, though the sharp temperature drop could result in icy patches where moisture remains from earlier flurries or melting snow.

Residents should prepare for bitterly cold conditions by limiting time outdoors and ensuring pets, livestock, and vulnerable individuals have adequate warmth. Drivers are urged to watch for slick spots on untreated roads during the early morning hours.

The frigid air mass will slowly moderate by the end of the week, with highs expected to rebound into the 20s and 30s by Friday. However, another reinforcing shot of cold air may arrive over the weekend, keeping Nebraska locked in a winter-like pattern into early next week.
