La Crosse, WI — A surge of bitter Arctic air will grip the Upper Midwest this week, bringing some of the coldest wind chills of the season so far. According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, overnight and early-morning wind chills will drop into the single digits above and below zero through Tuesday morning. Much harsher cold arrives Thursday, when wind chills are expected to plunge to –15 to –25 degrees across parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and northeast Iowa.
A detailed wind chill forecast shows persistent subzero readings overnight from Sunday through early Tuesday, followed by a brief midweek uptick before a stronger Arctic surge arrives late Wednesday into Thursday. The coldest period is expected early Thursday morning, when widespread –20°F wind chills will be possible.
Officials warn that wind chills this low can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes, and residents should take precautions. The Weather Service urges people to limit time outside, dress in layers, check car batteries, and bring pets indoors during the coldest periods.
Temperatures are not expected to meaningfully recover until the weekend.
