Chicago, IL — A powerful arctic cold front is sweeping across Northern Illinois today, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and subzero wind chills through the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago.

The front will also produce patchy light snow across parts of the area today before ushering in much colder air tonight. Forecasters warn that overnight lows will drop into the single digits below zero, with wind chills ranging from -15°F to -20°F both Wednesday night and Thursday night.

“Daytime highs Thursday will only reach the low to mid-teens,” the NWS said in its early morning update. “Conditions will remain bitterly cold into Friday morning before some moderation occurs over the weekend.”

The extreme cold may also cause rapid ice formation on area rivers, which could lead to freeze-up ice jams and localized flooding. The NWS advises residents to monitor river conditions closely, especially in known trouble spots along the Fox, Rock, and Des Plaines Rivers.

By the weekend, temperatures are expected to rebound slightly, with highs in the upper 20s and low 30s, though additional light snow is possible.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers, and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite. The NWS recommends wearing a scarf or knit mask, water-resistant coat, insulated gloves, and warm footwear if venturing outside.

The Weather Service also encourages residents to check on vulnerable neighbors, pets, and the elderly, and to ensure proper heating and safety precautions are in place.
