Northern Indiana — A surge of Arctic air will return to the region this weekend, bringing accumulating snow, lake-effect bands, and dangerously cold wind chills, according to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana.

Light snow begins tonight across southwest Michigan, with most locations seeing an inch or less. The main round of snowfall arrives Saturday as a quick-moving system spreads 1–3 inches across northern Indiana and southern Michigan. Forecasters highlight that the highest totals are expected south of US-30, where steady snow may briefly reduce visibility and make roads slick during the afternoon and early evening.

By Saturday night, colder northwest winds will generate lake-effect snow across northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. While localized additional accumulations are possible, the greater concern will be the sharp drop in temperatures. Overnight lows will fall to -2 to 8°F, but wind chills are forecast to plunge into the -5 to -20°F range late Saturday night.

Sunday remains bitterly cold with occasional lake-effect snow showers continuing in the morning. High temperatures will struggle to reach the lower 20s, and wind chills will again fall between -5 and -20°F early in the day. The frigid air lingers into Sunday night with wind chills of -5 to -15°F Monday morning, making the start of the new week exceptionally cold.

Motorists should plan for slippery travel Saturday afternoon and evening, especially where snow is heaviest. Residents are urged to take precautions during the cold snap, particularly for vulnerable individuals, pets, and exposed pipes.
