Indianapolis, IN — Central Indiana is headed into a stretch of bitter cold as wind chills fall into the teens and single digits over the next several days. According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, cold air and brisk northwest winds will combine to produce wind chill values generally between 15° and 25° through Saturday and Sunday. But conditions will turn even colder by Sunday night.

Gusty winds on Sunday will increase sharply, with speeds reaching 30 to 35 mph Sunday night. This stronger burst of wind will drop wind chills to around 10° for northern parts of the region, including Kokomo, Marion, and Muncie. Urban areas like Indianapolis will feel like the low to mid-teens, while areas farther south such as Bloomington, Shelbyville, and Columbus will see slightly higher—but still very cold—wind chill readings.

The cold pattern persists into early next week. Forecasters expect wind chills in the 5° to 15° range Monday night and Tuesday night, with the coldest readings likely for communities along and north of I-70. By Wednesday morning, wind chills remain frigid across central Indiana before easing slightly later in the week.

While the upcoming cold snap does not bring significant snow, the combination of low temperatures and frequent gusty winds could create hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. The NWS recommends dressing in multiple layers, taking breaks from the cold when possible, and ensuring homes are winter-ready to prevent frozen pipes. Pet owners should also take precautions, as wind chills near or below 10° can quickly become dangerous for animals.

With no immediate warmup in sight, residents across central Indiana should prepare for several days of winter-like cold and occasionally brisk winds.
