Centennial, CO – A shoplifting call at a Walmart in Arapahoe County escalated into a deadly deputy-involved shooting early Saturday morning.

According to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 7:12 a.m. to the Walmart located at 10900 E. Briarwood Avenue in Centennial. The suspect allegedly involved in the theft was reported to be armed with a machete.

When deputies attempted to make contact, the individual advanced toward them with both a knife and a machete. Authorities say one deputy deployed a Taser, but it was ineffective. As the suspect continued moving forward, another deputy fired their weapon, striking the man.

Deputies immediately began life-saving efforts until medical personnel arrived, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has been activated to review the case, as is standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings.

The Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the identity of the suspect. Additional details will be provided as the investigation continues.
