Charleston, West Virginia – Gusty winds are sweeping across parts of West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia this Saturday afternoon, making travel hazardous on open roads and high elevations. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should expect difficult conditions through sunset.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Charleston, Louisville, Blacksburg, and Jackson, sustained winds from the west-southwest between 15 and 25 mph are combining with gusts of 35 to 45 mph across the central Appalachians and Ohio Valley. Some ridgelines in western Virginia may see even higher gusts.

In West Virginia, communities from Huntington to Elkins are experiencing blustery conditions, especially along I-64 and US-33. Kentucky cities including Lexington, Bowling Green, and London are seeing similar gusts that could topple unsecured outdoor items. In southern Ohio, areas like Athens, Jackson, and Marietta are also under the same advisory. Meanwhile, high terrain in southwest Virginia could face gusts nearing 45 mph.

Residents should secure patio furniture, outdoor decorations, and garbage bins. Motorists are advised to keep both hands on the wheel, particularly when driving near semis or across bridges.

Winds will ease gradually after sunset, but isolated strong gusts may linger in elevated areas into the early evening.
