CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A calm, golden sunrise glows over the Kanawha River this Monday as a stretch of mild fall weather settles in — but don’t let the warmth fool you. A quick midweek cool-down will remind West Virginians that the first true chill of the season is closing in fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, sunshine dominates today and Tuesday, keeping highs in the mid-60s to near 70. Skies stay mostly clear, but a light southwest breeze will usher in slightly warmer air through Tuesday before a strong ridge shifts east. That transition will open the door to cooler, drier Canadian air by midweek.

By Wednesday, temperatures dip back into the upper 50s, and by Thursday night, readings could tumble toward the mid-30s in rural valleys. That’s cold enough for patchy frost, particularly in the higher hollows near Clendenin and along U.S. 119. Gardeners should plan to cover late blooms, and residents are advised to protect outdoor faucets and bring in sensitive plants.

No measurable rain is expected through midweek, though forecasters mention a slight chance of light showers Tuesday evening as the front moves through. Roads will remain dry for most commutes, but brisk winds may pick up across open stretches of I-64 and I-77 late Tuesday.

Looking ahead, models hint at a wider cool spell building by the weekend, possibly signaling West Virginia’s first fall freeze next week if clear skies persist.
