Charleston, WV – Showers and thunderstorms are moving through West Virginia today ahead of a strong cold front, bringing a risk of heavy rainfall and localized flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston reported that 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected across much of the region through tonight.
According to the NWS, an Excessive Rainfall Outlook has been issued for southeastern Ohio, northeastern Kentucky, and most of West Virginia, placing the area under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for flash flooding. Officials caution that flooding could occur in urban and poor-drainage areas, particularly during heavier downpours this evening.
Conditions are expected to improve by Wednesday as the front moves east. Temperatures will turn cooler and more seasonal mid- to late week, with highs in the 50s and low 70s. Forecasters also warn of potential frost or freeze conditions in the northeast mountains late Wednesday night into Thursday, and again early Friday.
Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads and avoid flooded areas. Residents in low-lying zones should monitor forecasts closely throughout the day.
