Charleston, West Virginia – Strong thunderstorms could disrupt travel and power across much of West Virginia within the next several hours as storms build into the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, scattered storms will develop and intensify by mid to late afternoon, with the greatest impacts expected between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. across Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, and Parkersburg.
The primary threat is damaging wind gusts that could exceed 60 mph, capable of downing tree limbs and causing isolated power outages. While the overall risk remains low-end, a brief tornado or small hail cannot be ruled out in stronger cells.
Key travel routes including I-64, I-77, and I-79 may see sudden downpours and gusty winds during the evening commute, leading to reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and stay weather-aware through the evening hours. The threat is expected to decrease overnight, but additional updates or warnings may be issued if storms strengthen quickly.
