Blacksburg, Virginia – A soaking rain event is set to bring much-needed moisture to southwest Virginia beginning late Thursday night, with the heaviest rainfall expected from Friday afternoon into Saturday, particularly across mountain communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a storm system moving into the region will deliver widespread rain, with the most consistent and impactful rainfall occurring Friday into Saturday. Forecast guidance shows higher confidence for totals of one inch or more across the mountains, while areas east of the Blue Ridge may see lighter amounts with greater uncertainty.
The New River Valley, including Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford, is expected to see steady rain develop Friday afternoon, continuing into Saturday morning. Mountain counties such as Giles, Montgomery, Floyd, and Carroll could receive the highest totals, offering beneficial moisture after a dry stretch. While flooding is not currently anticipated, brief ponding on roads and reduced visibility are possible during heavier rainfall.
Drivers should prepare for wet travel conditions along U.S. Route 460, Interstate 81, and secondary mountain roads, especially Friday evening and overnight. Residents are encouraged to clear storm drains and allow extra travel time during periods of steady rain.
Rain chances diminish later Saturday as the system exits the region. Additional updates may be issued as rainfall amounts become clearer, but the overall message remains focused on beneficial rain rather than hazardous impacts.
