Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has extended a Winter Weather Advisory across portions of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia, warning of snow accumulations up to 4 inches and dangerous travel conditions from 1 a.m. Monday through 1 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the NWS, snow will affect a wide area including Blacksburg, Boone, Wytheville, Bluefield, Floyd, Danville, and Covington. Lower elevations can expect 1 to 2 inches, while higher terrain, particularly in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Greenbrier Valley, may receive 3 to 4 inches.
Forecasters caution that both the Monday morning and evening commutes could be significantly impacted by slick and snow-covered roads. Visibility may also be reduced in heavier snow bands.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow for extra travel time, and check 511 services in their state for updated road conditions. Motorists traveling along I-81, I-77, and U.S. 221 should use particular caution through mountain passes.
Snow is expected to taper off late Monday night, but subfreezing temperatures could lead to refreezing and black ice into early Tuesday.
