ackson, Kentucky – Strong thunderstorms could develop in eastern Kentucky by late Friday afternoon, with damaging wind gusts capable of downing trees and impacting travel during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, storms are expected to form between 4 and 7 p.m. Friday and track across much of eastern Kentucky through the night. The primary threat will be wind gusts up to 60 mph, though isolated large hail cannot be ruled out if stronger cells develop.

Communities including Jackson, Pikeville, Hazard, and Morehead sit within a marginal risk zone, meaning storms may remain scattered but could intensify quickly. Travel along key routes such as the Mountain Parkway, Hal Rogers Parkway, and portions of I-64 could be affected by sudden heavy rain and reduced visibility.

While the tornado threat remains low, a brief spin-up cannot be completely ruled out in stronger storms. Forecast confidence remains medium, and storm coverage will depend on how much instability develops through the afternoon.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and stay alert for warnings Friday evening. Additional advisories are possible as conditions evolve into the overnight hours.
