Jackson, KY – Fires could spread rapidly across eastern Kentucky today as dangerously dry air and gusty winds peak during the afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, high fire danger is in effect from 10 a.m. through sunset. Southwest winds will increase to 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 10% to 20%, creating prime conditions for fast-moving flames.
The risk stretches across communities including Jackson, Hazard, Pikeville, and along the Mountain Parkway and KY-15 corridor. Dry vegetation, described as nearly fully cured, means even a small spark could quickly grow out of control.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with any equipment that could produce sparks. Properly disposing of cigarettes and avoiding parking vehicles on dry grass can reduce ignition risks.
Conditions will begin to improve after sunset as humidity levels recover, but the fire threat remains elevated throughout the day. Additional advisories could be issued if winds increase further.
