Morristown, Tennessee – Snow will continue to coat higher elevations of far southwest Virginia through Monday night, with wind chills dropping into the single digits and near zero at times.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight Monday night for Wise, Russell and Washington counties in Virginia. Two rounds of snow are expected. Light snow will fall Sunday morning, followed by a second round developing Sunday night and continuing through Monday. Total accumulations from both rounds will range from 1 to 4 inches above 2,500 feet, with isolated totals between 4 and 6 inches across the highest ridges. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will create areas of blowing snow.
Communities including Wise, Norton, Big Stone Gap, Abingdon and Lebanon may see slick roads, especially along U.S. 23, U.S. 58 and Interstate 81 near Bristol. Higher terrain routes and ridge-top communities face the greatest accumulation and reduced visibility.
The advisory covers both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check Virginia 511 for real-time road updates. Snow showers taper late Monday night, but cold wind chills will linger into early Tuesday.
