Wise, Virginia – Snow begins by midnight, and two separate rounds could coat mountain roads through Monday night, creating slick travel during both the Monday morning and evening commutes across southwest Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight tonight through midnight Monday night for Wise, Russell and Washington counties in Virginia. Snow will fall in two waves: the first from late tonight into Sunday morning, followed by a second round Sunday night through Monday. Areas above 2,500 feet can expect 1 to 3 inches of total accumulation, with isolated totals exceeding 3 inches across the highest peaks. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph.

Higher elevations along U.S. 23, U.S. 58 and Route 460 could see reduced visibility when snow combines with gusty winds. Communities including Norton, Wise, Abingdon and Big Stone Gap face the greatest risk for slick secondary roads and snow-covered bridges.

Lower elevations may see lighter accumulations, but shifting temperatures could allow untreated surfaces to refreeze overnight Sunday and again Monday evening.

Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check Virginia 511 before traveling. Snow showers taper late Monday night, though slick spots may linger into early Tuesday if temperatures remain below freezing.
