Charleston, W.Va. – Storm chances are climbing across West Virginia and neighboring states as showers and thunderstorms push into the region through Tuesday. Heavy downpours are possible in the higher elevations this evening, though the National Weather Service said widespread flooding is not expected due to recent dry conditions.

According to the National Weather Service office in Charleston, the most active period begins Sunday night into Tuesday, when southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky, and the West Virginia mountains could see stronger storms. Some of these could reach severe levels, bringing gusty winds, brief heavy rain, and localized hazards.

Charleston and Huntington will likely see scattered storms by Monday afternoon, with precipitation chances climbing above 60 percent into Tuesday. Higher totals are expected along mountain ridges, including Snowshoe, where thunder probabilities exceed 45 percent during peak hours Tuesday. Parkersburg, Clarksburg, and Beckley also face a steady risk of downpours through midweek, complicating morning commutes and outdoor plans.

Residents are urged to monitor updates and prepare for changing conditions. Drivers should watch for slick roads during heavy bursts of rain, while those in storm-prone areas should be ready for possible severe weather alerts.

The threat of showers and storms lingers through the week, with drier breaks possible late Thursday before another round arrives into next weekend.
