Central Illinois — Strong west to northwest winds will gradually ease through the day, the National Weather Service in Lincoln reported Sunday morning. Conditions remain cold with occasional flurries and areas of patchy blowing snow, especially northwest of Peoria.
A new weather system will move in Monday afternoon into Monday night, bringing an additional round of light but accumulating snow. Forecasters emphasize that this system will be drier and produce much less accumulation than the major event earlier in the weekend, though a few inches are possible.
Temperatures will remain cold through midweek. Highs are expected to reach the mid to upper 20s today, the upper 20s to mid-30s Monday, and the mid-20s to around 30°F on Tuesday.
Wednesday brings a brief moderation into the 30s, but another cold front will push through Wednesday night. By Thursday, highs fall into the mid-teens to lower 20s, with overnight lows dropping into the teens and lower 20s early in the week, and then the single digits — especially north of I-70 — by Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Wind chills may plunge below zero midweek, particularly late Wednesday into Friday morning.
Residents should prepare for cold travel conditions, occasional slick roads, and the potential for dangerous wind chills as the week progresses.
