Annandale, VA – A wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow is set to impact Annandale and the surrounding Northern Virginia area on Wednesday, creating hazardous road conditions. Drivers should prepare for slick highways and potential black ice, particularly on major routes like I-495, Route 50, and I-66.
According to the National Weather Service, snow and sleet are expected to begin early Wednesday morning, with freezing rain developing by evening. Temperatures will hover around 31°F overnight, with ice accumulation between 0.1 and 0.3 inches possible. The combination of ice and gusty winds could lead to downed tree limbs and power outages in some areas.
By Thursday, the system will transition to rain, with temperatures rising to a high of 47°F. However, roads may still be icy in the early morning hours before precipitation washes away frozen surfaces. Officials are advising commuters to delay travel if possible and use extreme caution if they must be on the roads.
Looking ahead, Friday will bring a temporary break from the wintry weather, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 52°F. However, another storm system is expected Saturday, bringing a mix of snow, freezing rain, and sleet before turning into rain by the evening.
Residents should prepare now by stocking up on essentials, charging electronic devices in case of power outages, and staying informed through weather alerts. Emergency crews are on standby, and road treatment efforts will begin ahead of the storm.
