Annandale, VA – A brisk wind and clear blue sky greet Northern Virginia this morning, but the calm won’t last long. As colder air grips the Mid-Atlantic, a developing system could bring a mix of rain and wet snow to the region by late Saturday into Sunday — just as post-Thanksgiving travelers hit the roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore–Washington, Friday will stay sunny but chilly, with highs only in the low 40s and gusts reaching 30 mph. Saturday remains calm through midday, but clouds will increase by late afternoon. Meteorologists now track a weak coastal disturbance that could deliver light rain after sunset — possibly mixing with wet snow early Sunday morning in higher elevations west of I-95 and near the Virginia–Maryland line.

While accumulations aren’t expected, even light flakes on cold surfaces could slick bridges and ramps along I-495 and I-66. Rain will continue through Sunday evening before tapering off into Monday morning, followed by a brief return to sunshine.

Temperatures will hover near freezing at night through early next week, marking a true “December preview” across the region. Another system midweek could bring additional showers and reinforce the early-winter chill stretching down the East Coast.

Travelers should keep an eye on timing if heading home Sunday — and prepare for changing road conditions north and west of D.C.
