Grand Rapids, Mich. – Strong storms packing wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rainfall are expected to sweep across Michigan through Saturday, bringing travel disruptions, localized flooding, and a low tornado risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, scattered thunderstorms will develop Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday, with the most intense activity likely during the daytime hours Saturday. All of Michigan is under a severe weather outlook, with central and southeastern areas, including Detroit, Flint, Lansing, and Ann Arbor, under a heightened Level 2 risk.

The main hazards include damaging wind gusts, isolated hail, and downpours capable of producing 1 to 3 inches of rain—especially along roadways and urban areas where water ponding may lead to temporary flooding. Lightning and a small chance of tornadoes add to the concern for outdoor activities and travel plans.

In Grand Rapids, storms are expected mainly before 11 a.m. Friday and again Saturday afternoon, with highs in the mid-80s and gusts near 20 mph. Drivers are advised to avoid flooded roads, secure outdoor items, and monitor alerts closely.

Storm chances taper off late Saturday night, with drier, sunnier weather returning Sunday through early next week.
