Ann Arbor, MI – Thieves broke into 27 cars parked at Pioneer High School during the University of Michigan basketball game on Sunday.
The smash-and-grab incidents happened around 4 p.m. in the parking lot. Ann Arbor police reported that vehicle windows were shattered by an unknown suspect or suspects. Authorities believe the thieves targeted valuables left inside the vehicles.
According to the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD), the break-ins occurred while a men’s basketball game attracted large crowds nearby. Police are investigating and asking for public assistance in identifying the suspects. Anyone with information is urged to call AAPD at 734-794-6920 or submit tips anonymously at aapd.a2gov.org/silentwitness.
To help prevent further incidents, AAPD reminded residents and visitors not to leave personal belongings in plain sight. Items such as purses, wallets, cell phones, cash, and personal identification are common targets. Police also encourage people to report suspicious behavior near vehicles to 911 or call 734-994-2911 for non-emergencies.
Car break-ins have increased during high-profile events, prompting law enforcement to issue safety warnings. Officials advise parking in well-lit areas and double-checking that vehicles are locked before leaving.
The investigation remains active, and police hope tips from the public will lead to arrests. As of now, no suspects have been identified.
