Ann Arbor, MI – Drivers across Ann Arbor are being urged to lock their vehicles and take their keys after police reported an increase in vehicle thefts and break-ins across the city.
According to the Ann Arbor Police Department, most vehicle thefts reported so far this month involved vehicles that had been left unlocked with the keys still inside.
Police said the city is also experiencing an increase in vehicle break-ins. The vast majority of those incidents have involved unlocked vehicles, according to the department.
The warning affects drivers throughout Ann Arbor and surrounding Washtenaw County, part of the broader Southeast Michigan region west of Detroit.
In response to the recent crimes, Ann Arbor police said officers have increased patrols in affected neighborhoods. The department also reported making multiple arrests during the past two weeks in connection with the incidents. Police did not provide additional details about those arrests in the public warning.
Authorities are asking residents to take several precautions, including removing keys and key fobs from vehicles, closing windows, locking all doors and parking in well-lit areas.
Drivers should also avoid leaving valuables inside their vehicles, particularly where they can be seen from outside. Police warned residents never to leave a running vehicle unattended.
Residents with doorbell or security cameras are encouraged to report suspicious activity captured on video immediately.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity should call 911. Ann Arbor police said residents can also contact Non-Emergency Dispatch at 734-994-2911 when appropriate.
The department’s message to residents was straightforward: Lock your car and take your keys.
