Ann Arbor, MI – Firefighters in Ann Arbor are reminding residents to check their kitchen exhaust fans after a small apartment fire Sunday was traced to an animal nest hidden inside a vent system.

According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, crews from Shift 1 responded to Island Drive on October 19, 2025, for a reported kitchen fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames burning within the walls of an apartment building.

Investigators determined the fire began when an animal nest inside the exhaust fan overheated. Over time, grease buildup and nesting materials ignited, causing a wall fire that could have spread quickly if not for the department’s rapid response. Damage was contained to a limited area of the unit.

Fire officials are urging residents to take preventive measures, including having exhaust fans inspected if they make unusual noises or seem to have reduced airflow. They also advise ensuring exterior exhaust vents have protective covers to prevent animals from nesting inside.

“This incident is a good reminder that even small maintenance issues can lead to fire hazards,” the department said in its post.

Residents are encouraged to report any fire hazards or concerns to the Ann Arbor Fire Department for inspection or guidance.
