Ann Arbor, MI – Police are warning residents to stay alert after a noticeable increase in thefts from unlocked vehicles across the city, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.

Officials say the majority of these thefts could have been prevented simply by locking vehicles and removing keys. “Nearly half of vehicle thefts happen because of driver error—such as leaving keys in the vehicle,” the department stated in a public safety post shared Monday.

To help reduce thefts, police recommend always taking key fobs when exiting a vehicle, locking all doors and windows, parking in well-lit areas, and avoiding leaving valuables visible inside. Residents are also reminded never to leave their vehicle running unattended.

Authorities say the department is increasing neighborhood patrols but stress that prevention starts with residents. “Let’s work together to reduce these preventable crimes,” the post added.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is urged to report it immediately by calling 911 or the department’s non-emergency line at 734-994-2911.
