Livermore, ME – Two people were killed late Monday night after a high-speed single-vehicle crash shut down a major stretch of Federal Road in Livermore, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
According to deputies, the incident began around 10:30 p.m. Monday when a patrol unit at the Turner Town Office on Route 117 and Route 4 noticed a dark-colored vehicle traveling north on Route 4 at a high rate of speed with a loud exhaust. The deputy pulled onto Route 4 in an attempt to catch up, observing the vehicle allegedly traveling in excess of 100 mph while passing multiple other cars.
Deputies say the pursuing cruiser activated its emergency lights but was never able to close the distance. The attempt to stop the vehicle was eventually terminated for safety reasons.
Shortly afterward, the deputy came upon the wrecked vehicle in the 1800 block of Federal Road. Investigators say the 2013 Audi Q5 allegedly left the roadway, struck a mailbox, clipped a utility pole, and went airborne before hitting a second utility pole. That impact caused wires to fall across Federal Road. The vehicle then hit a tree before coming to rest.
Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to officials. Their names have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Federal Road was completely closed from Route 108 in Livermore to Route 219 in Turner. The road reopened around 4:50 a.m. Tuesday after Central Maine Power repaired the damaged utility pole and wires. A crash reconstructionist from the Lewiston Police Department assisted at the scene.
Authorities say additional information will be released once families have been notified.
