Anchorage, AK – The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Anchorage and the Lower Matanuska Valley, in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday, as thick fog combines with below-freezing temperatures to create dangerous travel conditions across the region.
Meteorologists report visibility reduced to one-quarter mile or less, especially across west Anchorage, Eagle River, Birchwood, Chugiak, and along the Glenn Highway near the Parks/Glenn interchange and Knik River Bridge.
According to the Weather Service, frost may form on bridges and overpasses, producing slick spots during the morning commute. Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights, and increase following distance while fog persists.
The advisory comes as cold, calm overnight air trapped surface moisture, leading to dense fog formation along the Anchorage Bowl and adjacent valleys. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by late morning as temperatures rise and winds pick up.
Residents traveling along major corridors—including the Glenn Highway, Old Seward Highway, and Northern Lights Boulevard—should remain cautious through midmorning.
